History[]
Set in the tin mines of Malaya during the Japanese Occupation, Hei Jin is a socially conscious film focusing on a specific group in society: the dulang washers who pan for tin. The first production of Era Movie, a film company formed by well-known business personalities, writers and film directors in Singapore, the film was helmed by the company's first film director, Mr Tong Pha Hee, who was well-known for his ideas on producing films set in Malaya. The film's press conference was held at the Cathay Restaurant on 13 July 1962 and Mr Tong was present to introduce the stars of the film.
The story featured a romance between a young couple working in a tin mine company in Malaya.
Significance[]
Hei Jin is significant for being one of the few films made during pre-independent Singapore by a Singaporean. Furthermore, it is one of the few Chinese films that were made in a local film industry dominated by Malay offerings.
